After a covid-hit build-up that forced the cancellation of their opening game, the nib Blues produced a fast, fierce and physical performance to beat the Matatu side representing the South Island 21-10 at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.

The nib Blues scored three tries to one, but taking some time to benefit from a significant first half advantage in territory and possession.

Black Ferns prop, Krystal Murray showed some of her remarkable ball skills to pick up a rolling ball off the ground to dot over with Patricia Maleipo adding the extras to lead 7-3 at the break.

The unique balance of power and speed produced a line-break try for barn-storming Mele Hufanga to score early in the second half with Maleipo adding the conversion.

Matatu showed some strength to fight back with a barging try from close-in before Shannon Leota sealed the game to power over from an excellent nib Blues attack, with Krysten Cottrell converting for the final 21-10 result.

Comments from nib Blues Captain Ruahei Demant

“It means so much to our girls after the disrupted lead-up. The girls stayed positive and adaptable and the girls celebrated everything that came our way – and the win was a bonus.

The experience – we couldn’t have asked for anything better. That Sky Super Rugby Aupiki can finally be here is so cool not just for us but for the next generation of girls who aspire to be Black Ferns.

Super Rugby Aupiki has definitely bridged the gap between the FPC and International rugby. It is going to be crucial for so many players to go from playing domestic rugby to representing their country one day.

The level of trust in each other and in ourselves to do our core roles impressed me. I am so excited for our next game and wish there was more rugby in this competition.

There’s a short turn around and I know there will be some sore bodies tomorrow because the game was so physical. We can’t wait to play Chiefs Manawa at the weekend and we know we will have a lot more of our friends and family able to come down and support us.

I am so proud of all our players. We had a group of players come down 10 days ago, missing half our team and we had players with limited experience having to step up and set the bench mark.  I am so proud our young ones put their hands up, backed themselves, backed their cause and showed how they can play. It is going to be a hard job for Willie to pick the team.”
