OUR PATHWAYS

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi,
He toa takitini ke.

MY STRENGTH IS NOT MY OWN
BUT THE STRENGTH OF MANY

We are fortunate to represent such a special region. We recognise the responsibility we hold as representatives of the North. Our region is home to more than a third of New Zealand’s registered rugby players. Rugby icons from Northland, North Harbour and Auckland have entertained and inspired players from across the Rugby World.

Together with our provincial unions, we aim to design and implement a world class talent identification and recruitment process, as well as high-performance development programmes and academies.

These initiatives will provide important  pathways for players and coaches throughout our region to fulfil their potential and cement our status as THE place where the best talent comes from. Whether it be  age-group level representatives, the NPC, Super Rugby and onto the International stage, our region will be synonymous with producing and showcasing the world’s best.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

The plan is to build a world class, integrated, player development system that enables the appropriate development of our emerging talent.

In the process we will create clear pathways and support for players through our talent programmes for Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 playing groups.

There is close collaboration on sharing of resources across the region to identify and develop talent, with the Blues providing oversight and support to the provincial unions.

COACH DEVELOPMENT

Coach development is a key component of the provincial pathway plan. Emerging talent requires the best coaching they can get to be the best they can be. The development of coaching is a corner-stone of our overall programme. While much energy goes into engaging and nurturing young rugby talent, it is vital to grow and develop our coaching resource alongside this.

BRIAN WILSHER SCHOLARSHIP

A major part of the coach development programme is the appointment of a Development Coach each year who will join the Blues coaching group and lead the age grade development programmes. The Development Coach will gain insight from working with the Blues Head Coach and other coaches at the Blues. This appointment each year is made possible with the generous support from long-time rugby administrator, Brian Wilsher. The former Blues Director, Auckland Board member and life member of Pakuranga Rugby Club has funded the annual scholarship.
