BLUES CHARITABLE TRUST: BUILDING FUTURE LEADERS ON & OFF THE FIELD

Last week, the Blues Charitable Trust (BCT) wrapped up the first four weeks with Cohort 1 of its 2025 flagship programme, with 119 rangatahi from across Auckland taking part. Students from Onehunga High School, Tangaroa College, Liston College, Westlake Boys High School, Glendowie College, Auckland Rugby Pro-Sport, Lynfield College, Sacred Heart College, Epsom Girls Grammar School, Hobsonville Point Secondary School, and Tāmaki College engaged in leadership development designed to set them up for success.

This is just the beginning – Cohort 1 is the first of three groups taking part in BCT’s flagship programme this year. Over the coming months, two more cohorts will begin their leadership journey, ensuring that by the end of 2025, over 450 rangatahi will have participated in this transformational programme. Each cohort will return in July/August for a re-engagement workshop and continue their development with 12 months of online modules designed to reinforce their growth and decision-making skills. Beyond the flagship programme, hundreds more rangatahi will benefit through BCT’s bespoke workshops and initiatives tailored to their needs.

BCT exists to empower rangatahi to make good choices for great lives. The programme builds self-leadership, resilience, and practical skills for personal and professional success. Whether navigating transitions in education, stepping into new responsibilities, or preparing for future opportunities, BCT ensures students have the confidence and tools to take control of their own path.

Blues Players and Staff Giving Back

The Blues are more than just a rugby team – we’re part of the community, and our players and staff are committed to giving back. Throughout these first sessions, 15 Blues players have volunteered their time in person, engaging directly with students, sharing personal stories of leadership, resilience, and overcoming challenges. Some of the Blues players involved:

  • Sam Darry – Spoke about the importance of adaptability in leadership.

  • Marcel Renata – Shared his journey in overcoming setbacks and staying motivated.

  • Christie Cam – Spoke about mindfulness and having a growth mindset to overcome challenges.

  • AJ Lam – Talked about teamwork and self-discipline in high-performance environments.

  • James Thompson – Gave insights on balancing sport, study, and career aspirations.

On video: In addition to the players who attended in person, 11 Blues players, including six from our nib Blues Women, have contributed their insights through recorded messages, reinforcing key leadership themes in an authentic and relatable way. Beauden Barrett, Maiakawanakaulani Roos, Harry Plummer, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, Katelyn Vahaakolo, and Captain Patrick Tuipulotu, who was the original inspiration behind BCT, have shared powerful messages that will be used across all cohorts. These videos ensure that every student, regardless of their workshop schedule, has access to leadership insights from those at the top of their game.

And this is just the start – as the next two cohorts begin their workshops, even more Blues players and staff will step in to contribute, giving their time and insights to support rangatahi in their leadership journey.

Leadership at Every Level

The Blues' commitment to this kaupapa starts at the top. Andrew Hore (Blues CEO) is a shining example of #BluesPride, leading with the values that underpin both the Blues and BCT – People Matter, Connections Matter, and Excellence Matters. His leadership ensures that BCT’s mahi continues to grow, providing rangatahi with real opportunities to succeed and developing leadership for legacy across our communities.

BCT: Independent, Inclusive, and Focused on Impact

BCT is an independent youth charity, leveraging the mana of the Blues while staying true to its mission – empowering all young people to reach their potential, not just those involved in sport. While the connection to the Blues inspires, BCT’s focus is on equipping every rangatahi with the tools to thrive in their own unique journey.

How You Can Get Involved

The Blues are proud to support BCT’s mission, but we can’t do it alone. Whether you’re a fan, a business, or part of our wider community, there are ways to be part of this impact:

  • Partner with BCT – Businesses and organisations can play a role in helping BCT expand its reach and resources in Partnership.

  • Donate/Sponsor – Every contribution helps BCT continue to empower rangatahi and shape future leaders.

  • Volunteer – If you want to contribute your time and skills, reach out to Rob Woodley or Rosey Nathan to see how you can support the programme.

This is just the first stage of a year-long leadership journey. From pilot in 2022 to present, BCT’s impact continues to grow and innovate. With each cohort, more rangatahi gain the skills, confidence, and leadership foundation to shape their futures. To learn more or get involved, get in touch today – because empowering young leaders is a team effort.
