Cameron Suafoa is a versatile loose-forward who can also pack down at lock. He is also a graduate of St Peter’s College in Auckland.
Suafoa made his NPC debut for Auckland in 2019, before moving to Tasman for the 2020 season. He then relocated again in 2021 to North Harbour.
In 2022, Cameron’s consistent form at NPC level earned him a call-up to the Māori All Blacks side, making his debut against Ireland in Hamilton.
Suafoa had a breakout year for the Blues in 2023 where he played the vast majority of his rugby out of position at lock. He impressed from his very first start in the middle, with barnstorming runs and bruising defensive efforts.
Cameron was rewarded for a stellar season with a call-up to the All Blacks XV team and named as Captain of the North Harbour Bunnings NPC side.
In 2024, Cameron Suafoa leapt into the global rugby public’s consciousness, but not for the reasons he wanted. Suafoa was diagnosed with cancer and vowed to continue playing for the Blues despite undergoing treatment. Fans were unaware of Suafoa’s plight until he had to take time away from the game to focus on his recovery. Watch the video below for a full explanation of Suafoa’s rocky 2024 experience.
Despite his health challenges, Suafoa managed six appearances in the 2024 championship season. He continues to recover well from his cancer treatments and was again selected for the Māori All Blacks who toured Japan. Suafoa’s resilience and hard-working nature are at the cornerstone of what it means to be a Blues player. He’s an inspiration to his team mates and will be back next season where he’ll be hoping his rugby does most of the talking.
Cameron is contracted with the Blues through until the end of the 2025 season.
