RIEKO IOANE INKS 2027 CONTRACT EXTENSION
Blues star Rieko Ioane has signed a four-year contract extension until 2027 with the Blues, New Zealand Rugby and Auckland.
At just 26-years-old, Ioane, who is closing in on a century of Super Rugby caps – currently with 92 appearances for the Blues (91 Super Rugby, one vs British and Irish Lions) - said he is happy to be staying at his foundation club.
“I’m keen to continue building on what we have at the Blues and the All Blacks. I have goals I want to achieve on the domestic and international stage, so this is a commitment to completing those while cementing a legacy,” said Ioane.
“I’m proud to be signing through until 2027. I’m grateful to represent the city of Auckland and right now this is the best place for me, my family and my rugby.
Blues CEO, Andrew Hore, was equally happy to have Ioane staying in blue.
“Rieko’s been a standout performer for the Blues since joining the club in 2016,” said Hore.
“His ability on the rugby field is clear for everyone to see - he has exceptional speed and skills mixed in with that natural flair we’ve come to love over many seasons. He grew up in our region, attended school in Auckland and this contract extension gives him an opportunity to have a greater input in driving the vision of our club forward.”
Ioane is a key performer for the Blues with 47 tries to his name. He came through the Blues development system and has become one of the most lethal attacking weapons in the competition.
“As a club, we’re stoked to have Rieko committed to us once again and I’m sure Blues fans will be equally excited to know they can come and watch one of the most exciting talents in New Zealand rugby ply his trade at Eden Park for the Blues for seasons to come,” said Hore.
The former Auckland Grammar student represents his province with pride. The blue-and-white hoops remain close to Ioane’s heart and Auckland’s CEO, Jarrod Bear, is happy to see him continue with the province.
“The Auckland Rugby community is incredibly proud of what Reiko has accomplished on the rugby field, and it is exciting to have Rieko commit his playing future in New Zealand and representing the Blues, Auckland Rugby and his club Ponsonby.”
Since making his first-class debut at the age of 17, Ioane has put together an impressive resume. He’s started in 50 of 59 Tests for the All Blacks, was the 2017 World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year, has competed at an Olympic Games in Rugby Sevens and has represented the Maori All Blacks.
All Blacks Head Coach Ian Foster said it’s great news to have Ioane signed.
“Rieko has grown immensely as a person and a player and having him commit to New Zealand and the All Blacks for the next four years is a massive boost for our team.”
