Anton Segner joined the Blues in 2022 as the first German player to grace the Super Rugby stage. The SC 1880 Frankfurt product moved to Nelson from Frankfurt in 2017 on a school exchange, where he was introduced to rugby and immediately caught the eye of New Zealand Rugby’s top brass.

Segner was offered a scholarship by Nelson College, and decided to stay in New Zealand to see how far his talents would take him. At just 19 years of age, Segner made his debut for the Tasman Mako in Round Seven of the 2020 NPC. In 2021 he was named captain of the Crusaders Under 20s team, before opting to move to the Blues for the 2022 season.

He debuted for the club against the Hurricanes in Round Two making a handful of appearances throughout the season and continued his development in 2023, adding extra size to his frame and becoming a more dominating presence on defence. When given opportunities, Segner impressed, playing in all three loose forward positions and even earning the Player of the Match award against the Force at Eden Park.

Anton continued to grow in 2024, his positional versatility and work over the ball ensuring he made a further eight appearances throughout the Blues championship run. Segner also decided to move up to Auckland permanently and play his NPC rugby in the blue and white hoops. Blues fans will be hoping his rugby career continues on its rising trajectory as Segner eyes another season with the Blues as part of the highly competitive loose forward group.

Anton is contracted with the Blues through until the end of the 2026 season.
