AJ Lam possesses power, speed and guile on the wing, akin to his older brother Ben.
A graduate from St Peter’s College, AJ was brought into the NZ Schools squad for the second match against Fiji Schools in 2016.
He became a standout for Grammar TEC in Auckland club rugby, earning a call up to the Auckland side for the Mitre 10 Cup in 2019, making his debut against North Harbour.
Standing 1.92m and 105kg, Lam became a real handful for opposition in the 2020 campaign, playing eight times and bagging seven tries.
He became a magnet for Super Rugby sides, but opted to remain at home, and accepted a spot in the Blues side.
AJ made his debut for the Blues in a Round Six victory against the Hurricanes during Super Ruby Aotearoa 2021 - crossing the line four times in his rookie season for the Blues.
Upon returning to the NPC, Lam bagged himself a hat-trick for Auckland against Canterbury, continuing his exceptional strike-rate in the domestic competition.
After a superb season, 2023 was a little stop-start for Lam who battled injuries throughout, making eight appearances for the Blues. However, he still showed his attacking flair and finishing ability in spades and was selected in the All Blacks XV to tour Japan.
In the Blues 2024 championship season, Lam played a pivotal role throughout the campaign, appearing 15 times for the club and most notably playing and excelling in the number 12 jersey.
He told Rugby Pass about the differences he encountered when shifting positions.
“There’s a lot more contact in it, a lot more ball handling but I think my type of game is to just try my best to get something going for the team, whether that’s putting my body on the line for a tackle or a carry, whichever it is I’m happy to do it for the team,” said Lam.
Lam enters 2025 as part of a backline contingent bursting with talent. After a successful championship season under his belt, he will be pushing hard to lock down a regular spot in the Blues matchday 23 for the season ahead.
AJ is contracted with the Blues through until the end of the 2026 season.
