This week we look back to 2003, the last time the Blues took out the Super Rugby Championship. One man who was integral to the Blues’ success in 2003 was the mercurial Carlos Spencer.
“King Carlos” as he became known to fans scored a whopping 608 points and earned 96 caps for the Blues, before eventually leaving to join Northampton Saints in 2005. But he was arguably at the height of his powers in 2003, as you’ll see in this highlights package from that year.
We claimed the 2003 Super 12 title with a thrilling 21-17 victory over the Crusaders at Eden Park. Although we were outscored three tries to two, Spencer’s accurate goal kicking was enough to ensure we won our third title.
As well as winning the title, Spencer was rewarded with the famous black #10 jersey in the All Blacks, starting in all 14 tests that year.
