Blues fans heading to our match against the Bulls couldn’t ask for a better rugby entrée than the Westie Pies Secondary School 10s Tournament.
Kicking off from 12pm this Saturday on the outer fields of QBE Stadium, 12 schools from across the Blues rugby region will be battling it out for the boys’ division title, while seven schools will be competing in the girls’ division.
The public is welcome to come and watch, but you’ll need a match ticket to view the semi-finals and finals, which will be played on the main field as a lead-up to the Investec Super Rugby match between the Blues and the Bulls.
The girls’ final will kick off at 5:35pm, and the boys’ final will be at 6:05pm. Both matches will also be live on Sky Sport ahead of the main event at 7:35pm.
Last year, Kaipara College were unbeaten in the girls’ division, prevailing over Tangaroa College in the final. Meanwhile, Mt Albert Grammar beat Westlake in the boys’ division final to win it for the second year in a row.
The tournament, now in its third year, was established after we won the inaugural World Club 10s event in Singapore in 2014. Teams of ten play ten-minute halves, resulting in a quicker, more free-flowing game than traditional 15-a-side rugby.
