The Blues are excited that Super Rugby will return as the first rugby competition in the world returning to play after this pandemic. It will be great to get back to what we do best – play great rugby for our supporters, commercial partners and fans.
We look forward to details of when we will start playing and the full competition structure.
We know that we will be part of a 10-week Investec Super Competition against the other New Zealand teams – and that our fans love local derbies so to have this very week over 10 weeks will be exciting.
We are also aware that the landscape will be significantly different on our return – around how we can train and how we can play but we are working positively with New Zealand Rugby and the NZ Government to create a safe environment under Level 2 – and we thank them for their tireless work.
There will still be restrictions as we establish a safe bubble inside our club around our players. Some training may still have to continue individually at home, for instance. And unfortunately we are now aware that the competition will kick off without fans being able to attend, however we are hopeful this will change during the competition – in the interim fans will need to wear their Blues gear and shout their support with their friends and family watching on television.
We hope to be able to provide more detail next week with more specifics for our stakeholders, commercial partners, members and fans. Overall though, this is wonderful news for the Blues and for rugby.
