To commemorate the first-ever Investec Super Rugby match in Samoa, we’ve produced two limited-edition rugby balls that draw inspiration from the proud island nation, the Blues rugby region, and from some of the tattoos of our Samoan players.
That’s right. Our Samoa-inspired blue supporters ball and the official match ball feature designs that are straight off the bodies of Jerome Kaino and Sonny Bill Williams, who led the design process, as well as Augustine Pulu, Rene Ranger, Pauliasi Manu, and Akira Ioane.
Their tattoos have been integrated into the design along with patterns and Polynesian motifs that represent Rangitoto and the City of Sails, our three Super Rugby championships, and the two rugby teams coming together in competition in Samoa.
The official match ball, which will actually be used in our game with the Reds at Apia Park on Friday night, is a simplified version of the blue supporters’ ball, with uniquely Samoan style and flare.
We’ll have a number of limited-edition blue Samoa supporters balls available for purchase from merchandise stands at Eden Park on Friday night at our match against the Chiefs.
