TJ is an exciting midfield back whose blistering pace and agility turned heads while playing for the New Zealand Secondary Schools (2013) and New Zealand Under-20s (2014,2015). The St Kentigern College old boy graduated in 2013, after helping the team win three consecutive 1A titles.
TJ debuted for the Auckland provincial side in 2014 at the age of 18 and in 2015 he was again selected for the NZ U20 team, which won the World Rugby Under 20 Championship title.
TJ debuted for the Blues in 2017 against the Crusaders and played 7 more times that season, including the memorable victory against the British & Irish Lions. In 2018, TJ added another 8 Blues caps to his name.
An incredible premiership winning season as captain for Auckland during the 2018 mitre 10 Cup was more than enough to earn a new contract for the Blues in 2019.
2019 saw TJ competing with All Black veterans Sonny Bill Williams and Ma’a Nonu for the starting centre spots, starting every single game until a hand injury forced him to miss the last round match against the Hurricanes.
Such was TJ’s influence on the team, he was recognised as the Blues Most Valuable Player for 2019. His desire, commitment and tenacity earning the respect of his teammates, coaches and fans.
TJ’s form and influence continued into 2020, forming a formidable mid-field partnership with Rieko Ioane. Now in his 4th season with the Club, and playing more than 50 games for the Blues and has cemented his place as one of the senior leaders of his hometown team.
Faiane played in his 50th game for the Blues in the Super Rugby Trans Tasman Round 1 clash with the Rebels in Melbourne.
