Tamati Ellison made his debut for the Blues as an injury replacement in 2005, playing just one game for the franchise before rejoining the Hurricanes in 2006 where he played for five years.

In 2006, Ellison was a member of the New Zealand Sevens team that won gold at the Commonwealth Games. In 2007 he captained the Wellington Lions to the final of the Air New Zealand Cup and won the Wellington Player of the Year award.

Ellison’s outstanding 2009 Super 14 season was rewarded with captaincy of the New Zealand Juniors All blacks to play in the Pacific Nations Cup. Ellison then made his All Blacks debut against Italy in 2009 at the end of year tour.

In 2010, Ellison left to take up a contract with the Ricoh Black Rams in Japan.
