Sean Fitzpatrick, the hooker and Sacred Heart College old boy caught the eye of national selectors while with the powerhouse Auckland Rugby side in the 80s.

He was deputy captain behind Andy Dalton at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 and helped the side earn the title at Eden Park. Fitzpatrick was awarded the captaincy in 1992 and continued to lead the side until his retirement from test rugby in 1997.

Fitzpatrick was as tireless as ever in the first two seasons of the Super 12, to such an extent his understudy, Andrew Roose, didn’t take the field at all in 1996 and made just three appearances in 1997. Fitzpatrick was also an ideal stand-in captain when Brooke was injured.
