The Kent-born first five-eighth has been educated in both northern and southern hemisphere rugby. Francis initially served a three-year apprenticeship with the Saracens Academy before moving to New Zealand in 2011 to take up a place in the Auckland squad.

He remained in New Zealand another year, playing for Waikato and the Chiefs Wider Training Group, before returning to the UK to play for Edinburgh.

He returned to New Zealand in 2015 to play under Tana Umaga for Counties Manukau, and his displays earned selection to the Blues. His debut season was outstanding, earning the Rookie of the Year honours. Piers became a key part of the much improved defensive effort in the backs, with his communication, fitness and physicality a key. After taking five rounds to get his chance, Piers started in 11 straight games in the number 12 shirt. He also took over the kicking late in the season, kicking 36 points in three games.
