Michael, a complete utility who can play midfield, wing or fullback, attended Otago Boys High School. He captained the 1st XV and was selected for New Zealand Schools in 2011.
He was first selected for Otago in 2012 at the age of 19 and has played more than 50 times for the southern province. He was a standout player for NZ in the Under-20 World Cup in 2013.
Before joining the Blues, Michael enjoyed a stint playing for the famed Llanelli Scarlets in the Pro12 competition for the 2015-16 season.
He moved to the Blues for 2017 and impressed with his professional approach, all-round skills and excellent communication. He sealed the fullback spot and has become a key senior leader as well as outstanding contributor. Michael won the captaincy for Otago in 2018 and led them to a famous Ranfurly Shield victory.
By the end of his time with the Blues Michael had earned 29 caps, including the famous victory over the British & Irish Lions in 2017.
