Matt is an outstanding hooker and captain for the Northland Taniwha. He is a tall and athletic player, who moved from loose forward to hooker. He debuted for Northland in 2013 and by 2015 had earned the  title of captain.

He was selected by Gordon Tietjens for the NZ Sevens side in 2014, the same year he made his debut for the Taniwha. He joined the Blues Development team in 2014 and was part of the Blues side that won the World Club 10s title. He made his Blues debut in 2015 and earned a full contract in 2016, playing twice that season.

Matt has been battling captain James Parsons since 2017 for the starting spot and earned 31 caps for his efforts. His dynamic ball carrying, and immense physicality was a regular feature during his time with the Blues.

At the end of the 2019 season, Matt departed the club to join Melani Nanai at the Worcester Warriors club in the English Premiership.
