James was born in Samoa before moving to New Zealand with his family at the age of two. He schooled in Auckland, attending King s College. He played initially for Auckland in 2016 before moving to Bay of Plenty with his brother Jordan, playing 14 times in the following two years.

After being selected for Samoa, James took up the opportunity to move to the UK, playing for the Bristol Bears under Pat Lam after receiving a call for a two-month stint to alleviate injury issues. His brother Jordan also signed fulltime from the next year.

He went on to play a further two full seasons at Bristol during which time he was selected for Samoa for the 2019 Rugby World cup.

He continued at Bristol before returning home in the Covid-hit 2020 year and was selected for Auckland for their Mitre-10 Cup campaign, playing seven times.

His form earned his call-up to the Blues for the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa season.
