The Fijian-born utility back came to New Zealand in 1997 to join the Auckland Development XV. He returned to Fiji a year later to play for Nadi in the regional competition, the Farebrother Sullivan Trophy, against Suva. He was then recruited to play for the Brumbies in 1999, followed by the Blues in 2000 and then the Highlanders in 2001.

Tanivula developed his speed with the New Zealand Sevens team in the early 2000s and was awarded Player of the NPC while with Auckland in 2003. Post-rugby, Tanivula returned to Fiji to coach regional teams and the national Sevens side.
