The Christchurch Boys’ High School old boy and Lock went down the traditional student route before earning a shot at professional rugby.

Matenga graduated from Otago University in 2009, where he earned a degree in Tourism & Marketing. It was also the same year that he earned his first provincial Cup contract with Otago, followed up by a berth in the Highlanders Wider Training Group.

While at University, Matenga helped found the now international band Six60 playing bass with his friends Matiu Walters and Eli Paewai who also pursued rugby. Matenga chose to pursue rugby when he received the WTG contract.

Between 2012 and 2015, Matenga played for the Kubota Club in Japan then returned to play for the Wellington Lions in 2015.
