The New Zealand U20 representative started his career with the Blues (2008) and Auckland Rugby (2007), using it as a springboard into international rugby.

In 2012, Grayson took up a contract with the Waratahs and then Edinburgh. This lead on to an international career with Scotland, thanks to his maternal grandmother who was born in Glasgow.
