The first French international to grace the Super Rugby competition, Christian Califano made his Test debut for France in Christchurch in 1994 in the same match that began the international career of Jonah Lomu.
The versatile campaigner, who was equally at home on either side of the scrum, was named in France’s Team of the 20th Century. He was part of the French squad for both the 1995 and 1999 World Cups, and also made a shock return to international rugby when he was called up to play against New Zealand in 2007.
After a one-year stint at the Blues in 2002, he went on to play for Saracens and SU Agen before finishing his career with Gloucester in 2008.
