Blair Urlich began his first-class career in 1998 with North Harbour and came into the Blues side for two years in 2000. He made the New Zealand Maori side and earned a one-year contract with Japanese club Mitsubishi Dynaboars.

The All Black legend played 50 caps as second five-eighth for the national side between 1990 and 1998, known for his pairing with Frank Bunce. He made 145 appearances for North Harbour and earned most of his Super Rugby caps with the Chiefs, before completing his New Zealand career with the Blues in 2000.
