Former Ospreys and Waratahs head takes over at Blues

The Blues Chairman, Don Mackinnon today announced that New South Wales and Waratahs CEO, Andrew Hore will take up the appointment as the chief executive of the club.

Hore, 47, originally from Canterbury, was previously CEO of Ospreys Rugby Club in Wales and before then, was High Performance Manager for New Zealand Rugby. He has a deep background in rugby as director of physical conditioning and player development for the Welsh Rugby Union and conditioning coach for the Crusaders.

Mr MacKinnon said the Board was delighted to secure a Chief Executive of Hore’s standing.

“Andrew has a vast amount of experience, a deep understanding of the rugby environment and a track record of achieving sustained improvement on and off the field,” said Mr Mackinnon.

Mr Mackinnon said that interest in the role had been significant both in numbers and global interest which reflects how positively candidates view where the Blues is heading as an organisation. He said the Board was delighted and impressed with the quality of many of the applicants.

“However Andrew’s all round skills made him the stand-out candidate. He has achieved outstanding commercial success in his previous roles, has shown a real ability to work closely with key stakeholders such as provincial unions and to achieve major changes through consultation and collaboration.

“He also has an outstanding record in high performance sport, he is a passionate rugby fan, and we believe we bring huge drive and energy to the role.”

Mr Hore said he is excited at the challenge and the opportunity ahead.

“I am deeply honoured to be accepting the role of CEO for the Blues, a rugby region with a proud history,” Mr Hore said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the NSW Rugby Union for granting me the opportunity to lead the organisation, we have achieved a significant amount of transformation over the last three and a half years and I am sure this will assist NSW Waratahs in continuing to be a fantastic competitor in Super Rugby level in the future.

“I now look forward to working with Don and the rest of the Blues family to bring success for Blues Rugby and settling back in New Zealand.”

Mr Hore will take up his position in December and until that time the Chairman and various Board members will work with senior management at the Blues in management of the club.

Current Chief Executive Michael Redman (who announced in July that he would be moving on) finished his duties at the end of September. Redman was at the helm for six years and Mr Mackinnon reiterated that he has done an excellent job as CEO of the Blues.

“We are extremely grateful for the work Michael has done for the club, he will always be part of the Blues family and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”
