The Blues will be out to show they will be genuine contenders in 2017 when they take they next take field at the inaugural Brisbane Global Tens in February, says star forward Jerome Kaino.
Played at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on February 11 and 12, the Brisbane Global Tens features all 10 New Zealand and Australian Super Rugby clubs plus French powerhouse Toulon, Japan’s Robbie Deans-coached Panasonic Wild Knights, South Africa’s Blue Bulls and the Samoan national team.
Teams featuring the game’s biggest stars will compete in ten-a-side matches over 10-minute halves in pool play and then knockout matches.
“It is great to see another major event created that will showcase exciting rugby to the sporting world,” said Kaino, who along with coach Tana Umaga attended the Auckland launch of the tournament today.
“I’m looking forward to the tournament already and so are all of the boys I’ve spoken to about it. Suncorp Stadium is one of the great venues to play in. The Brissy summer weather will make it a great summer outing – I’m sure the atmosphere will be incredible,” said Kaino.
“We won’t be treating it as a holiday though. It’s a great chance to measure ourselves against our Super Rugby rivals and we will be out to show we will be contenders in 2017. With the speed and power we have in our squad, we’ll back ourselves to challenge for the first ever Brisbane Global Tens title”.
Umaga described the tournament – which has been locked in as the showpiece launch for the Super Rugby season for the next four years – as “great addition to the rugby calendar”.
“Tens is fast-paced, with extra space, but plenty of room for big forwards as well, so in that way it sets it apart from 15’s and 7’s,” he said.
“There’s a lot of excitement in the team about this fresh new event for Super Rugby. We expect it will be competitive and exciting to watch.”
Tickets are on sale to general public in New Zealand from Thursday, August 11. They can be purchased from www.ticketek.com.au/BrisbaneTens.
