Blues v Hurricanes Super Rugby Preview

Blues v Hurricanes Super Rugby Preview

Our Blues will have a massive challenge on their hands when they meet the reigning Super Rugby champions at Eden Park on Saturday night.

Desperate to get back on track after a cruel loss against the Highlanders in Dunedin last weekend, our team will be looking to bounce back with a crucial victory against one of the hottest attacking sides in the competition.

That’ll be no mean feat. No team has scored more points, or more tries in the competition so far this year than the Hurricanes, who boast the top three most prolific try scorers – Vince Aso and Ngani Laumape have scored seven tries each, and Julian Savea has five.

In comparison, the Blues currently rank fifth overall for number of tries scored with 25. Our most prolific scorers this season have been Rieko Ioane and Matt Duffie, who have four each.

Form going into this match

The Hurricanes were made to work hard for their 38-28 win over the Waratahs last weekend, despite leading 33-7 at halftime. The Australian side managed to claw its way back into the match by holding onto the ball and shifting it wide – effectively playing the Hurricanes at their own game.

Fortunately for us, that’s exactly the style of rugby that the Blues like to play. Last weekend our team just couldn’t defend its seven-point lead at halftime, as the Highlanders clawed back the deficit and managed to repel multiples waves of attack.

To be fair, we were our own worst enemies at times as handling errors began to creep into our game. Expect to see a concerted effort to make less mistakes this weekend against the Hurricanes.
