The Blues have taken inspiration from its natural ocean surrounds in the design and materials for their Investec Super Rugby away playing jersey unveiled by adidas.
The jersey has been crafted to reflect and honour the natural environments of the Auckland and Northland region. It is made from Parley Ocean Plastic which is recycled plastic waste collected from beaches and coastal communities before it reaches the oceans.
As part of its ongoing mission to end plastic waste, adidas has committed to shift entirely to recycled polyester by 2024, and to inspire Blues fans to join the movement, the design of the away jersey features aquatic-style patterns and links to the Blues local environment.
The Blues jersey takes inspiration from the Auckland Harbour Bridge which is an important icon of the region, crossing the Waitemata Harbour and joining Auckland city with the North Shore and the links to Northland. It is a beacon for sustainability with its solar-powered lights.
The jersey graphic design comes from the reflection of the bridge in the water.
The Blues have a sustainability plan designed to reduce their environment footprint, and hope that the new away jersey will play a small part in promoting the need for a more sustainable approach by everyone.
“We embrace this new away jersey for the Blues as a symbol of our intention to become more aware of our responsibility in looking after our environment – creating less waste, recycling and composting our food waste, and playing a small part in helping to protect the beaches and waters that are so synonymous with what makes this region such a superb place to live,” said Blues Chief Executive, Andrew Hore.
