Milestones good news for the future

The international break is a good opportunity to look back on some Blues achievements and player milestones during the 2017 Investec Super Rugby season, of which there have been many.

A whopping nine players have made their Super rugby debut this season: Michael Collins, TJ Faiane, Hame Faiva, Bryn Gatland, Josh Goodhue, Stephen Perofeta, Leighton Price, Murphy Taramai, and Jordan Trainor.

Meanwhile, a further five players have made their Blues debut, having appeared for other teams previously: Alex Hodgman, Declan O’Donnell, Augustine Pulu, Jimmy Tupou and Sonny Bill Williams.

During the season we’ve seen experience campaigners Piers Francis, Blake Gibson, and Billy Guyton reach 20 caps, and Ofa Tu’ungafasi reached the 50-match milestone.

Early in the season, Ihaia West passed 300 Super Rugby points for the Blues, joining a select group of players that includes Adrian Cashmore, Carlos Spencer, and Luke McAlister.

We’ve posted two scores of 50 or more (v Rebels and v Cheetahs); the last time we did that twice in a season was in 2008.

One of those 50+ scores came way back in round one, when we recorded our first-ever win over the Rebels away in Melbourne. Then our victory over the Waratahs in Sydney later this season was our first win there since 2003.

We took the first-ever Super Rugby match to Samoa in round 15, a match that we won, closely followed by what could well be our defining match of the season – our historic victory over the British & Irish Lions at Eden Park.

We’re looking forward to facing the Sunwolves for the first time when we return to action in July. In the meantime, enjoy some of our best tries of the second half of the season.
