The Blues will meet the Hurricanes at 4pm this Waitangi Day for a pre-season match at QBE Stadium in Albany, continuing what has become a 20 year rivalry.
Friday. March 1. 1996. Two rugby teams met in Palmerston North for what would be the beginning of a beautiful rivalry. The Blues faced the Hurricanes for their first game in the Super Rugby competition.
It was a tense game, both sides showing remarkable grit and determination. For the Blues, boasting players like Zinzan Brooke and Joeli Vidiri, it was an important game to make its mark on the new professional competition. The Auckland visitors were able to come away with a 36-28 victory after a late try.
