BEST & FAIREST (Selected by Mediaworks)
5 Points: Steven Luatua
Very strong in defence especially the tackle and turned over some excellent ball. Slowed after a shoulder knock in the second half.
3 Points: George Moala
First start of the season and defended strongly, showed up late in the game with some telling runs which proved a handful for the Waratahs.
1 Point: Charlie Faumuina
A fierce scrum battle against the Wallaby front row. Also excellent in defence, showed his passing and attacking skills, playing key role in the Blues’ try.
WHAT THE COACH HAD TO SAY:
Tonight we didn’t get out of our half and the 9-1 penalty count showed that our discipline was not good enough. We had a couple of opportunities late in the game and did not take them. Against a very good side like the Waratahs you can’t spend the whole time defending. We showed courage and commitment but in the second half we just couldn’t get out of our half.
Sir John Kirwan
WHAT THE PLAYERS HAD TO SAY:
We spent too much time in our red zone. We defended for long periods of the game but came back well in the second half. But we paid for our mistakes at important times. We can’t afford to get down. We need to get home and regroup and focus on our next game against the Chiefs.
